How it works — Real-Time Web Search

Real-Time Web Search

NuBench AI searches the web automatically when your question needs current information — live results, cited sources, no hallucinations about recent events. Detection is automatic; cited sources are always included.

How it works

Automatic query detection

NuBench detects when a question requires live information — market prices, breaking news, recent documentation, or anything with a meaningful time component — and issues a web search before generating a response.

You do not need to ask NuBench to search the web. Detection happens automatically at the routing layer. If you prefer to always use web search for a session, you can pin it from the chat input controls.

Brave Search integration

Searches are executed via Brave Search, which returns web results without profiling your queries against an advertising graph. Results are injected into the model context before the response is generated.

The search query is derived from your prompt by a lightweight classifier — your raw prompt text is not transmitted to Brave. Only a structured query representing the information need is sent.

Cited sources in every response

Every web-search-assisted response includes inline citations for the sources used. You can inspect the source URL, the retrieved excerpt, and the retrieval timestamp before trusting any claim.

Citations are structured data, not appended footnotes. They are stored in the conversation record alongside the response and are available in the audit export.

The Globe indicator

A Globe icon in the chat input signals that web search is active for the current conversation or turn. When search is auto-triggered, a visual indicator appears inline in the response as the results are being retrieved.

You can disable web search for a specific turn from the chat input controls if you want the model to answer from its training knowledge alone.

Use cases

Market and pricing data

Ask NuBench about current commodity prices, equity data, interest rate benchmarks, or real-time currency rates. NuBench retrieves live data and cites the source, rather than answering from training knowledge that may be months old.

Current events and news

Follow a developing story, monitor a regulatory change, or track an earnings announcement. NuBench retrieves the latest reporting and presents a structured summary with sources you can verify.

Latest documentation and releases

Ask about a library version released last week, a platform API change, or a newly published regulatory guidance document. NuBench retrieves the current documentation rather than answering from a stale training snapshot.

Recent announcements and filings

Track press releases, SEC filings, regulatory notices, or product announcements. NuBench finds the relevant document, extracts the key points, and cites the source — saving a manual search session.

Privacy and data governance

Classification applies to search queries
Search queries are classified at the same tier as the conversation they originate from. A Confidential-tier conversation generates a search query that is treated as Confidential — it is not logged to a shared search history or used to improve a third-party search index.
PHI tier restriction
Web search is disabled by default in PHI-classified conversations. Enabling it for a PHI conversation requires explicit Tenant Admin configuration, and all search queries remain within the admin-approved endpoint list.
No user profiling
NuBench uses Brave Search specifically because it does not build an advertising or behavioral profile from search queries. Queries are structural extractions from your prompt — your raw text is not transmitted.
Audit trail
Every web search event — query issued, results retrieved, sources cited — is written to the immutable NuBench audit trail with the user identity, conversation ID, classification tier, and timestamp.
